Momma Mia! asked:
Did you find that breastfeeding helped you lose weight? If so, when did this weight loss begin—immediately postpartum or another time? Please no lectures about how the baby’s health is most important–I know this and wouldn’t devote myself to bf just for quick weight loss. Thanks moms!

yeah, the weight drops off. i’m now still breastfeeding a year on, and i’m lighter than before i was pregnant, and i used to exercise like mad and i have no time now.
As you probably know, breastfeeding burns up to 500 calories extra a day. I had a time when my milk supply dropped and my midwife told me to eat more cake!!! seriously!

Strip That Fat
I breastfed my daughter until she was 2mths old, I had to go back to work at 6wks and just wasnt able to keep my supply up I could only pump once at work. I did lose all of my weight quickly, I gained 30lbs during my pregnancy and had lost all of it at the end of week 1, in fact I was back into my preprego clothes when she was only 2 days old. However, I dont think that breastfeeding had anything to do with the weight loss. I think it is because I am in the military and was very physically active throughout the pregnancy and was fit before the pregnancy and started working out when I went back to work. But, to each his own. I do know some women that have breastfed and are still trying to lose the “baby fat”.

My daughter is almost three months old now and I have breastfed the whole time and will continue to do so. As for the weight loss, you do lose up to 500-600 calories when you breastfeed, but if you eat a lot, you wont see the weight drop. That was my problem. I was throwing up every day for my entire pregnancy! So when I gave birth and my stomach went back to normal…lets just say I loved food. But I am still losing about a pound a week even though I eat a Hersey chocolate bar every other day and three FULL coarse meals a day with soda too! But I also do pilates everyday. But a pound-loss a week is good for me!
Nonetheless, if I wasn’t breastfeeding, I would definitely be gaining weight.

I breastfed for 4 months and didn’t lose a lb from it even though I was eating healthily. I agree with the saying ‘each to their own’; some people drop the weight…..some people don’t. I am just the unfortunate fool who now has to go and slog it out in the gym 3 times a week to lose the 2 stone I have put on

Fat Loss 4 Idiots
I know it helps some, but it hasn’t helped me. I admittedly gained 50 lbs, and I am having to work at it to get it off. I lost 30 right away, gained 5 back (8 weeks post baby), and have now lost 12 lbs since I started dieting at 12 weeks. I have found that I have to be careful on my calorie reduction or I start to notice a drop in my milk production. My doctor recommended staying at 1700 calories, going low carb(which works better for me since I am boderline insulin resistant), and exercise.

YES! I am breastfeeding newborn twins and lost 32lbs in the first 9 days postpartum. I only gained 40lbs with the whole pregnancy, so I basically got my pre-baby body back instantly. You have to try it!
